BAPTISM

In Holy Baptism, God bestows a gift, a gift to guide us through life, and a gift to embrace us right on into eternal life!

Baptism is God’s action for us, a pure gift, and that is why we baptize people of all ages – even infants – for who is more free and open to receive a gift than an infant?  In Baptism, God delivers us from the forces of evil, puts our sinful self to death, gives us new birth, adopts us as children, and makes us members of the Body of Christ, the church.

Just as Christ welcomes all people into his family, Farmington Lutheran Church welcomes all people to the life-giving waters of baptism, regardless of membership. We simply ask that parents of infants and young children attend a Baptismal preparation class.  Older children and adults should make arrangements with one of the pastors for personal instruction.

Baptisms take place within the normal worship assembly as a celebration for all God’s people and a sign that we are being welcomed into the “family” of Christ.  In that worship setting, the community of Farmington Lutheran confesses faith alongside those being baptized and offers their welcome, their support, and their prayers. Due to time constraints, baptisms are usually not scheduled at services when Holy Communion is celebrated or during other festival worship gatherings.
