FARMINGTON FOOD SHELF UPDATE
Some interesting statistics as we wrapped up 2024 at the Farmington Food Shelf.  We had a 27% increase in household visits; 1,881 compared to 1,479 in 2023.  Pounds distributed jumped from 149,000 lbs. to 182,000 lbs.  Our rescue pounds from our 4 sites (Target on Pilot Knob, Aldi in Lakeville and the two Kwik Trips in Farmington) came in almost exactly the same as last year.  We are pleased that the new Kwik Trip on highway 3 will partner with us starting in February.  Also of note is that donated food actually came in at the lowest poundage since 2019, at about 36,500 lbs.  That makes it obvious that we have had to purchase more food from Second Harvest Heartland to meet the needs of our expanding clientele.  Every bit helps and we can’t thank you enough for all that you do!

Some exciting news is that we are working towards being certified as a Super Shelf.  This is a program through the University of MN Extension office that helps food shelves transform into a more welcoming and efficient site, with focus on more healthy choices and an appealing presentation of the food.  We hope to make this transformation mid-February.

Also, watch for more information on MN Food Share Month (March 1-April 6). Donations of goods and monies have an extra impact during this campaign, sponsored by the Greater MN Council of Churches (GMCC).  Each participating food shelf receives funding in proportion to the donations received at their site during this time frame.

Feel free to contact Karen Brownawell with questions about the food shelf (651-356-2980 or rhpositive03@yahoo.com). If you or someone you know needs food assistance, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment by calling 952-985-5300.
